What Is Paint Correction?

Look at your paint in direct sunlight. If you see a web of fine circular scratches, dull patches or a hazy look instead of a deep reflection, your paint needs correction. Those swirl marks usually come from automatic car washes, dirty towels and improper washing over the years.

Paint correction is the process of carefully machine polishing the clear coat to level out those defects. Instead of filling or hiding scratches the way some waxes do, correction actually removes them, so the gloss you see is the paint itself.

Signs You Need Paint Correction

  • Spider-web swirl marks visible in sunlight or under gas station lights
  • Light scratches from keys, bags, branches or car wash brushes
  • Paint transfer from another car, a pole or the garage wall
  • Dull, faded or hazy paint that no longer shines after a wash
  • Water spot etching that won’t wash off

Our Paint Correction Process

  1. Inspection. We look at the paint with you and talk through which defects can be removed and what result to expect.
  2. Wash and decontamination. Polishing a dirty surface would grind contaminants into the paint, so everything comes off first.
  3. Correction. We machine polish panel by panel, using the right pad and polish combination for your paint.
  4. Refining. A finer polish brings out maximum clarity and gloss.
  5. Reveal. Polishing oils are wiped away so we can check the true finish and make sure nothing was missed.
  6. Protect. We’ll recommend protection, ideally a ceramic coating, to keep the results.

Paint Correction and Kansas City Driving

Kansas City drivers rely on automatic washes to fight off winter salt, and those brushes are a leading cause of swirl marks. Add gravel roads, parking lot scuffs and summer sun that fades unprotected paint, and many vehicles are carrying years of defects. Correction brings back the finish, and protection afterward helps keep it.

Correction vs. a Full Repaint

Paint correction works within your existing clear coat, preserving the factory paint. For most swirls, light scratches and paint transfer, correction is far less expensive and less invasive than repainting a panel. If a scratch has gone through the clear coat, we’ll tell you honestly rather than overpromise.

How Long Does It Take?

Paint correction is one of the most labor-intensive services we offer. A light enhancement on a small car takes much less time than a multi-step correction on a full-size truck. Your free quote will include a time estimate.

Protecting Your Corrected Paint

  • Protect it with a ceramic coating, or a wax or sealant at minimum.
  • Avoid brush-style automatic car washes.
  • Wash with clean microfiber and the two-bucket method, or let a maintenance plan handle it.

FAQ

Paint Correction Questions

All FAQs →

What’s the difference between paint correction and a detail?

A detail cleans the paint. Paint correction actually removes defects by machine polishing a very thin layer of clear coat to level out swirls and light scratches. It’s what restores real depth and gloss.

Can paint correction remove every scratch?

It removes swirls and light scratches that sit in the clear coat. A scratch that’s deep enough to catch your fingernail or that goes through to the primer may be improved but not fully removed. We’ll be honest about what to expect after looking at your photos.

Should I get ceramic coating after paint correction?

We recommend protecting corrected paint. A ceramic coating locks in the results and makes the vehicle easier to maintain, while wax or sealant is a shorter-term option.

How long does paint correction take?

It depends on the size of the vehicle, the paint’s condition and how far you want to take the correction. We’ll give you a time estimate with your quote.
